Elizabeth Horn Photography’s Blog bio picture

Welcome!

Welcome to my blog!

My name is Elizabeth Horn.  I am a child/family photographer in the Chicago area.  I specialize in natural light photography with a photojournalitic style.  I love to capture people in their natural state, keeping posed shots to a minimum.  I shoot people of all ages, but focus mainly on child, family and high school senior photography.

Please feel free to check out the posts here and to comment freely.  I hope my posts are both timely and informational, and provide insight into what I do and how I go about doing it.

I would love to hear your feedback on my work.  My goal in having a blog is not only to hear your feedback and provide you insight into my work, but also to connect more with you, my clients, as well as other photographers.  I sincerely hope that I will be able to reach out and share ideas to a much greater extent with the help of this blog.

Thanks much for visiting!

Elizabeth

What an Honor…

My husband and I had the pleasure to sit down with Linda Bendorf (writer for the Chicago Tribune) for an up-close and personal interview about the business.   We sat down with her at her house over wine and cheese and it was great fun recounting some of our early experiences and reasons we went into the business.   Linda was great at pulling memories I had completely forgotten about :)

The article was originally just going to be in the online version, but the editor liked the article so much that he put it on the front page of today’s (11/26) print edition!  If you’re in the NW burbs of chicago, pick up a copy, or you can read it here:

A Look Back…

I had some incredible shoots this fall.  It was so hard to choose a few to put up here, but these are some of my favorites.  Hope you enjoy!  – Elizabeth

Sweet Declan

I had the honor of  shooting my close friends’ 3 week boy, Declan.  We used natural window light on a perfect, softly diffused day.  Declan showed up ready and willing.   He lasted beautifully through the whole shoot.  I think he made mommy and daddy proud!dsc_0975-5x7dsc_1257-5x71dsc_1318-5x7-bw

Working in Black and White

These are black and whites of my 3 year old.  I love the moodiness you can get from a rich black and white.  I use this kind of black and white more sparingly because it can have a sophisticated feel, but in this case, I thought it was a great fit.

Back from Ohio…

I shot Paige when she turned two back in ‘06.   The family since moved to Ohio.  I was thrilled to get a call that they were coming back into town.   Now their little one, Sara, is turning two!   I had the honor of taking her two year old pics!  Mom wanted something that would match Paige’s square canvas.  I think we got some fun ones that showed off Sara’s vibrant personality!   It was also a blast seeing how Paige has grown.  What a sweetheart!

A Day at the Beach

I loved the closeness shared between this brother and sister.  It’s a rare, beautiful thing.  I didn’t have to ask them to move closer in during the shoot…they actually WANTED to :)

Fun Project for Dentist Office

I’m working with the most wonderful families right now which is part of a larger project to create some great photos for a wall gallery at a local pediatric dentist’s office.  Here are just some of the fresh faces that have graced my studio.

August 27, 2009 - 11:28 am Heather - We used Beth for pictures of our 3 week old son. She is extremely professional, affordable, lovely to work with and talented; and, the photos are spectacular. She had many great ideas in mind about nice shots but was also adaptable to his needs and moods and more than willing to incorporate our suggestions and wishes. Cognizant of his young age, she repeatedly offered breaks for him and was in no way disturbed when he got upset or when he peed or pooed inopportunely. She took the pictures of our son in natural light; however, she offers a studio option as well. Finally, the photos were amazing! My husband and I both like photography, have some very nice camera equipment, and have taken some photography classes over the years. Needless to say, we’ve probably already taken hundreds (Ok probably thousands) of pictures of little man. Ours didn’t hold a candle to hers. Light and composition were stunning and in some he looked absolutely angelic (even though I know he fussed much of the session as we’ve been struggling with extreme acid reflux - formerly known as colic). At the same time, this was clearly our child and not an unrecognizable airbrushed version. We could not have been happier with the outcome. I found my son changes so rapidly, I desperately wanted to capture really nice pictures of him when so little before I lost the opportunity. Finding someone of quality who is a pleasure to work with and not outrageously expensive is tough. Potluck - you don’t know what you’ll get, so I thought this might benefit someone else. I would wholeheartedly recommend Beth without reservation.
